Dr Heelan is considered an expert in medical dermatology. She has published three book chapters and over 20 articles in peer-reviewed medical journals. Her main areas of interest include acne, rosacea, atopic dermatitis (eczema), psoriasis and inflammatory skin conditions. She subspecialises in skin cancer, melanoma, drug reactions and blistering diseases.
Dr Heelan has a special interest in blistering diseases of the skin. These are rare conditions. The majority of these are autoimmune. Her MD thesis has been awarded on ‘Autoimmune bullous dermatoses: Studies on treatment, comorbidities, work productivity and clinical features’.
She has co-authored a book chapter on Pemphigus Foliaceus in Autoimmune Bullous Diseases – Approach and Management Springer First Edition and has extensively published her work in peer-reviewed dermatology journals. She is currently a member of the British Association of Dermatology bullous pemphigoid guideline committee.
Drug reactions are a research sub-specialty area of interest of Dr Heelan’s. She completed the advanced medical fellowship under the mentorship of Professor Neil Shear an internationally renowned expert in drug reactions and toxic epidermal necrolysis.
In her current position at the Royal Marsden Hospital, she specialises in drug reactions and skin toxicity.
She has co-authored book chapters on drug eruptions in internationally renowned textbooks including Fitzpatrick Dermatology Elsevier Ninth Edition and Signs of Systemic Disease Elsevier Fifth Edition.
